When you think of the colour red, what comes to mind? Love? Passion? How about a powerful movement that’s been transforming women’s heart health for over two decades? And it’s one that the Cayman Heart Foundation is emulating here in Cayman. So, let’s take a brief journey through the history of “Wear Red for Women” and see how the Cayman Heart Foundation is painting the town red to inspire greater awareness.
A Heartfelt Beginning
Back in 2004, the American Heart Association (AHA) noticed a concerning trend: cardiovascular disease was claiming the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet many women remained unaware of the risk. That still remains too true today and here in Cayman, perhaps even more so. To combat this, the AHA launched the Go Red for Women campaign, turning the red dress into a national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. This initiative wasn’t just about fashion; it was a passionate call to action, urging women to take charge of their heart health and recognise symptoms associated with heart disease.
The Red Dress Takes Centre Stage
Why the red dress, you ask? In 2003, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute introduced the red dress as a national symbol to raise awareness about heart disease in women. The AHA adopted this symbol to create synergy among organisations committed to this cause. The red dress became more than just attire; it symbolised strength, unity, and the fight against heart disease, especially as it was claiming so many lives.
Cayman Heart Foundation Continues the Movement
Inspired by this vibrant movement, the Cayman Heart Foundation (CHF) has embraced the red dress’s spirit, encouraging the local community to dig out their finest crimson attire (or literally anything red!) for Friday 7th February, the official National Wear Red Day®, and whilst doing so, tell people just why and make even a small donation to the work of the CHF to help tackle this. By wearing red, individuals not only make a bold fashion statement but also raise awareness about the importance of heart health among women.

Spotlight on Women’s Heart Health
Now, whilst you are reading, let’s build that awareness. It’s essential to recognise that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women. However, many are unaware of the unique symptoms they might experience. While chest pain is common, women may also encounter:
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea or vomiting
- Back or jaw pain
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Unexplained fatigue
Being aware of these symptoms and seeking prompt medical attention can make all the difference.
Get Involved: Wear Red and Spread the Word
Ready to rock that red dress or dapper red tie? Here’s how you can join the movement:
- Wear Red: On Friday 7th February 2025, National Wear Red Day® in the US, proudly wear red to show your support and spark conversations about women’s heart health and it’s under-appreciated impact on women’s lives.
- Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the risk factors and symptoms of heart disease in women. Share this knowledge with friends, family, and colleagues.
- Donate: Consider contributing to the Cayman Heart Foundation to support their mission of improving cardiovascular health through education and early diagnosis. Your funds will save lives and even a $25 donation pays for screening somebody.
- Share: A movement requires others. How many can we get? On our Wear Red Day page you can find suitable text, hashtags and a picture to share across your social channels to shout out your participation and encourage others too. Let’s all paint the town red!
By coming together and embracing the power of red, we can make a significant impact on women’s heart health. So, let’s unite, spread awareness, and inspire change – one red outfit at a time!
